Chennai was established by the British in the 17th century as a trading port and was the site of former Indian, Portuguese and Dutch settlements. Located on the northeastern corner of Tamil Nadu on the Bay of Bengal, India’s 4th largest city is still affectionately known as Madras outside of India. Although Chennai is the capital of the south, the population of over 7 million people means this destination is hot, congested and noisy.
Attractions in Chennai include pilgrimage sites connected with the apostle Doubting Thomas, fine specimens of Raj architecture, plenty of classical music and dance performances and superb Chola bronzes at its state museum. In recent years, Chennai also boasts a new cosmopolitan glamour. With its luxury hotels, classy contemporary restaurants and sparkling boutiques together with a sprinkling of swanky bars and clubs, Chennai should be more than just a transit destination on your India holiday itinerary.
