Amrit Sarovar

Amrit Sarovar

Shaped as large rectangular tank, Amrit Sarovar makes the perfect hinterland for the holy Golden Temple (Harmandir Sahib Gurudwara) and is one of the most beautiful parts of the city of Amritsar, Punjab. Amrit Sarovar means a pool of nectar and is an integral part of holy Golden Temple. The city of Amritsar was built around this lake which is popularly known as the holy Amrit Sarovar and it has given the name Amritsar to this city. This sarovar was created by the fourth Guru of the Sikh religion. It was constructed in 1586.

It serves as the holy reservoir and all the devotees before visiting the Harmandir Sahib wash their hands and feet in this sarovar. Some even take bath before entering the Gurudwara. This sarovar is considered to be very holy and it is believed that a dip in the holy water of this sarovar can cure several ailments of the devotees. A popular story says that years before, a leper took a dip in this holy water and his leprosy was cured completely.

Also popularly known as Golden Temple, the Harmandir Sahib Gurudwara, is one of the most exquisite and remarkable structures ever built in India. The beauty of the place and the perfect architecture of the Gurudwara on the lake leave the tourists spellbound and awestruck. It is one of the monuments which one must visit once in the lifetime. The Golden Temple is also associated with the Blue Star Operation that was carried out by Indira Gandhi in 1984.

This Gurudwara is very famous among the Sikhs from all over the world and is among their holiest places. It sits on a vast rectangular platform right in the centre of Amrit Sarovar Lake and thus enhances the beauty of the lake.
