Destination Overview

The Linayanti region was once the haunt of professional hunters but in recent years the area has been taken over for photographic safaris and has quickly become one of the best safari areas in Botswana.

A hidden gem in northern Botswana, the beautiful Linyanti Wetlands is lodged between the Okavango Delta, the Chobe National Park and Namibia's Caprivi Strip.  There are three private wildlife reserves - Linyanti, Selinda and Kwando. Meandering waterways lined by papyrus and sky-high reeds wind through islands covered in dense groves of trees and a diverse array of wildlife.

This remote location offers secluded tranquillity with no crowds and has resulted in safari enthusiasts referring to this destination as a hidden paradise. Both day and night time exploration of the marshy wilderness with game drives and walking safaris offer a more intimate experience of the landscape. Incredible wildlife sightings give visitors great chances to snap photographs, which may feature creatures such as elephants, aardvark, zebra, lions, leopards, cheetah, rare wild dogs, giraffes, elands, sables, hippos, hyenas and myriad water birds like pelicans.

The Linyanti region is fast becoming one of Southern Africa's prime game viewing destinations. Once part of a great inland lake, the area is dominated by water habitats. Its wide, permanent rivers and sprawling floodplains not only support a wide range of wildlife that matches that of the Okavango Delta but provide one of Southern Africa's best bird watching destinations as well - expect many regional rarities and superb raptors. Such an abundance of game makes a Linyanti safari a year-round option.

Getting to any of the camps in the Linyanti Concession is by light aircraft flights from Maun, Kasane, or another camp in northern Botswana. There are two main airstrips in the concession; one on the river's floodplain near to King's Pool and another cleared from the bush between Duma Tau and Savuti Camp. All these camps work on the basis that the logistics are worked out well in advance. Everybody who arrives has a prior reservation (most made months ago) and everyone arrives and leaves by light aircraft. No self-driving visitors are allowed into these camps, even by prior arrangement.
