The heritage of over 100 years of coal mining is celebrated here alongside an active and creative arts community. Outdoor recreation is a way of life all year round with a network of trails rising from the banks of the beautiful Elk River into the upper alpine.
People come here for the powder – an average winter will dump almost 9m/29ft of the stuff on Fernie Alpine Resort. As the warmer months approach, Fernie comes alive with flower-trimmed downtown patios and guided and self-powered adventures and new possibilities are revealed. These include fly-fishing, hiking, river rafting and mountain biking. The historic downtown core is a charming, tree-trimmed boulevard of rose-gold brick and stone buildings, home to artists and artisans, cultural attractions, inviting coffee shops and independent boutiques and outdoor gear retailers.
