The Dempster Highway is a beautiful drive with few services, and Eagle Plains is a small but necessary stop. Take the opportunity to enjoy a hot shower, throw in a load of laundry, gas up and have a good meal.
Chat with those coming from the direction you're headed and swap notes on the current road conditions. On this epic stretch of highway, being prepared pays off. Several species of wildlife live in this region including caribou, sheep, bears and wolves as well as small mammals like pikas and marmots. Falcons and golden eagles can be spotted soaring overhead. From Eagle Plains, you can look across sweeping valleys to the mountain range in the distance. Head north for a photo at the Arctic Circle sign, or south toward the breathtaking vistas of Tombstone Territorial Park.
