Destination Overview

A holiday to Chobe National Park is quite simply one of the most impressive safari experiences in Africa. As the second largest park in Botswana, covering about 11,700km² of the northern Kalahari, much of the Chobe National Park is impenetrable with thorn bush growing on deep sand.

Chobe National Park has an abundance of wildlife throughout the year and is famous for its predators. Spot lions, hyena, jackals, cheetah and even wild dog.

At the edge of the Chobe River you may see a variety of species including waterbuck, lechwe, puku, giraffe, kudu, roan, sable, impala, warthog and bushbuck along with the accompanying predators: lion, leopard, hyena and wild dogs. The park also boasts well over 460 bird species making it one of Africa's premier destinations for birding safaris. Common species to be seen include Sacred Ibis, Egyptian Geese, Cormorants and Darters, Spur-winged Geese, Pel's Fishing Owl and Carmine Bee-eaters.

Chobe National Park is home to Africa's largest remaining population of elephants. If there's one memory that you'll take away from a Chobe safari, it's that of elephants with some 70,000 of them living in and around the Park. You will find huge numbers of them crowding the banks of the Chobe River and Savuti Channel during the long dry season. And elephants are just the start. Chobe is also where lions regularly take on herds of buffalo and clash with packs of hyenas. It is the setting for a spectacular summer zebra migration and the place to see wild dogs hunting and abundant bird life. Put simply, a Chobe safari holiday offers some of the best, most close-up game viewing in Africa.

From Zambia, Chobe and Kasane can be accessed via the Kazungula Ferry, a short trip of less than ten kilometres. From Zimbabwe the parks can be accessed via a well serviced tarmac road - Victoria Falls is a 70 km drive away. For this reason days trips can be organised into Chobe from Victoria Falls or vice versa.
